Specificaiton
ZC-Benzyl alcohol is a colorless, transparent liquid with a faint aromatic odor. It has a boiling point of 205.4°C and a freezing point of -15.3°C, dissolves in water at a ratio of about 1:30, and is readily soluble in alcohol, ether and chloroform.
It is supplied in two grades: a pharmaceutical/industrial grade with an assay of at least 99.95% and a fragrance grade with an assay of at least 99.97% and lower aldehyde content (≤ 200 ppm). Both grades have a color of 10 Hazen or lower and a water content of 0.1% or lower.
During prolonged storage, benzyl alcohol can be oxidized by oxygen in the air to benzaldehyde and benzoic acid, which may give it a bitter-almond odor, so it should be kept in tightly closed containers.
