ADEKA REASOAP ER 20

New Reactive Surfactant

ADEKAREASOAP ER/SR series are new reactive surfactants having a radical polymerizable group in their structure and an alkyl group instead of the nonyl phenol group in the old version. They can be used in the same way as existing emulsifier, but with improved properties.
Besides the use as emulsifier, ADEKARESOAP can be used as a monomer for resin modification
enabling radical polymerization.

Product Detail

Product Description

ADEKA REASOAP ER-20 is a nonionic reactive surfactant manufactured by ADEKA Corporation (Japan). It belongs to the ER/SR series of allyl-ether type emulsifiers, which carry a radical-polymerizable group in their molecular structure. Unlike conventional nonyl phenol (NP) type emulsifiers, ER-20 uses an alkyl group in place of the nonyl phenol group, making it a nonyl-phenol-free (NP-free) alternative suitable for regulatory environments that restrict NP-based surfactants.

With 20 moles of ethylene oxide (EO) and 75% active solid content, ER-20 is designed for use as a copolymerizable emulsifier in emulsion polymerization, and can also act as a monomer for resin modification through radical polymerization. It is compatible with a wide range of monomer systems, including acrylic, acrylic/styrene, EVA, and SBR.

Key Benefits

● Nonyl-phenol-free (NP-free) alternative to conventional reactive emulsifiers

● Copolymerizes with monomers to form a covalently bonded, non-migrating surfactant layer

● Improves water resistance, adhesion, weather resistance, and heat resistance of the resulting resin film

● Good emulsification and copolymerization performance across acrylic, acrylic/styrene, EVA, and SBR monomer systems

● Produces stable polymer emulsions suitable for coatings, adhesives, and binder applications

Application

ADEKA REASOAP ER-20 is used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization for coatings, adhesives, and binder resins. It is suitable for acrylic, acrylic/styrene, EVA, and SBR monomer systems, and is often selected where nonyl-phenol-free formulations are required without sacrificing water resistance or film performance.

For applications requiring anionic emulsification characteristics or higher chemical stability against electrolytes, the related SR series (SR-10, SR-20, SR-1025, SR-3025) can be used alone or in combination with ER-20. Data from ADEKA's internal testing shows that combining an anionic SR-series emulsifier with a nonionic ER-series grade such as ER-20 or ER-30 can meaningfully improve chemical stability against calcium chloride and frozen-thaw stability compared with using an SR-series emulsifier alone.
