Trigonox 42S

tert-Butyl peroxy-3,5,5-trimethylhexanoate
CAS number 13122-18-4

Trigonox® 42S is an efficient initiator for the ethylene polymerization under high pressure in both autoclave and tubular processes. To obtain a wide spectrum of polymerization temperatures, combinations with other peroxides are applied in practice. Depending on reaction conditions, Trigonox® 42S is active in the temperature range of 210-240°C. Trigonox® 42S can be used as initiator for the solution (co)polymerization of acrylates and methacrylates in the temperature range of 90-175°C, amongst others for the manufacture of coatings. Trigonox® 42S can also be applied as an initiator for the bulk and suspension (co)polymerization of acrylates and methacrylates in the temperature range of 90-130°C. Trigonox® 42S may be used for the (co)polymerization of styrene in the temperature range of 90-140°C.

Product Detail

Trigonox 42S overview

Trigonox 42S is tert-butyl peroxy-3,5,5-trimethylhexanoate (TBPIN, CAS 13122-18-4) from Nouryon, a liquid perester with an assay of at least 97 %. It is an efficient initiator for high-pressure ethylene polymerization (LDPE) in autoclave and tubular reactors at 210–240 °C, where it is often combined with other peroxides to cover a wider temperature range. Other LDPE initiators in our range include Trigonox B and Trigonox C.

It is also used for (co)polymerization of acrylates and methacrylates, at 90–175 °C in solution processes including coatings resins and at 90–130 °C in bulk and suspension, and for styrene (co)polymerization at 90–140 °C. For more background, read our article on the properties and applications of TBPIN. See all grades in the organic peroxide range.

Applications

-LDPE: high-pressure ethylene polymerization in autoclave and tubular reactors at 210–240 °C, often in combination with other peroxides.

-Solution acrylics and coatings resins: (co)polymerization of acrylates and methacrylates at 90–175 °C.

-Bulk and suspension acrylics: (co)polymerization of acrylates and methacrylates at 90–130 °C.

-Polystyrene: styrene (co)polymerization at 90–140 °C.

Storage and handling

Store Trigonox 42S between −20 °C and 25 °C in tightly closed original containers, in a dry, well-ventilated area away from heat, ignition sources and direct sunlight. Keep it away from reducing agents such as amines, acids, alkalis and heavy metal compounds. Its SADT is 55 °C.

Trigonox 42S FAQ

Q: What is Trigonox 42S?

A: Trigonox 42S is Nouryon's tert-butyl peroxy-3,5,5-trimethylhexanoate (TBPIN), CAS 13122-18-4. It initiates high-pressure LDPE polymerization and the polymerization of acrylates, methacrylates and styrene.

Q: What is the half-life temperature of Trigonox 42S?

A: Measured in chlorobenzene, its 10-hour half-life temperature is 94 °C, its 1-hour half-life temperature is 114 °C and its 0.1-hour half-life temperature is 135 °C.

Q: At what temperature is Trigonox 42S used in LDPE?

A: In high-pressure ethylene polymerization it is used at 210–240 °C, depending on reaction conditions, and is often combined with other peroxides.

Q: How should Trigonox 42S be stored?

A: Store it between −20 °C and 25 °C in closed original containers, away from heat, ignition sources, reducing agents, acids, alkalis and heavy metal compounds. Under these conditions it stays within specification for at least 3 months after delivery.

Q: Where can I get the Trigonox 42S TDS and SDS?
